Lhoist North America Leaders Work to Eliminate Waste in Snowman Production
CHARLESTON, SC, - February 1, 2010 - With the support of Life Cycle Engineering (LCE), 50 executives from Lhoist North America gathered together this past December to build a snowman during their manager’s meeting in Texas. The snowman, made of Styrofoam, was the center of a one-day workshop on waste elimination.
Identifying and eliminating waste continues to be an important effort for Lhoist North America in 2010. To jump start their efforts, the company called on LCE to develop a seminar with the purpose of engaging leadership on the importance of waste reduction. The result was a simulated snowman production process. The simulation introduced situations where participants had to analyze the process, make decisions about efficiency, scrutinize quality and achieve production goals.
Participants were divided into groups and told that they must work together to complete a certain stage in the snowman building process. Real-world business constraints (quality issues, transportation issues, equipment reliability, etc.) were introduced along the way by the facilitator. As result of the simulation, the managers learned that with any waste elimination program there will be major change for employees and as leaders; they are responsible for leading their employees through change.
