Alternative Energy and Environmental Issues

LCE’s alternative energy/environmental philosophy is expressed by the following quote:

“No one silver bullet solution can meet our society’s future energy needs, and any serious proposal must include the diverse energy technologies that do not deplete our natural resources or destroy our environment.â€
– SERC – State Environmental Resource Center

The key emphasis regarding alternative energy is diversity, so LCE engineers are constantly researching the latest developments in major energy sources including:

    * Efficiency Improvements
    * Solar
    * Wind
    * Bioenergy
    * Nuclear
    * Coal with Carbon Capture
    * Water
    * Geothermal
    * Waste to Energy

We are also knowledgeable on key supporting technologies and issues affecting multiple sources, including:

    * Storage
    * Electrical Grid/Smart Grid
    * Battery Electric Vehicles
    * Advanced Heat Exchangers
    * Advanced Lighting
    * Criticality of Rare Earth Elements
    * Reuse/Recycling

The most important environmental issue facing mankind is global warming, and one of the key impacts of global warming is reduced access to clean, affordable fresh water. We are constantly researching state-of-the-art technologies for water desalinization and purification.

Systems and Software Engineering

Systems and Software Engineering for the U.S. Navy

Depending upon the specific phase of a ship’s life cycle, our LCE subject matter experts are involved in engineering and technical services in the following areas:

Systems Requirements & Specification Development

System specification development requires reviewing top level requirements to meet operational needs.

Software and Hardware Requirements

Once top level requirements are developed, software and hardware requirements are developed to tailor the specifications to require standardized, Commercial Off the Shelf (COTS) components for reduced life cycle management cost, improved availability and supportability.

Software Development

Using CMMI principles for software repeatability and reliability, we develop software using PLC ladder Logic and C++ for Human Machine Interface (HMI).

Systems Engineering

We integrate seasoned engineering disciplines with unique expertise into a team effort forming a structured development process that proceeds from concept to installation to operation. Our process considers both the overall benefit as well as the technical needs that will meet the U.S. Navy’s needs as well as increasing system performance reliability.

Writing Test Plans and Test Procedures

We write test plans and procedures to ensure all test requirements for shock, vibration, environmental, etc. are sufficiently tested in the most effective and efficient way.

Building Out Test Labs and Developing Simulation Test Equipment

We create test component list builds, order and procure equipment, set up test equipment, and develop simulation/stimulation (SIM/STIM) equipment and software to test the systems equipment.

System Installation

We coordinate the installation and development as well as conduct the training of systems on new and existing ships at waterfront locations including San Diego, CA, Norfolk, VA, Mayport, FL, Bath, ME, Pascagoula, MS and Bremerton, WA. Our expertise is enhanced by extensive experience throughout fleet homeports around the globe, by supporting material assessments, equipment repairs and machinery alterations.

Technologies

We work with a variety of technologies including Machinery Control Systems (MCS), Sensors and Instrumentation, Integrated Condition Assessment System (ICAS), Integrated Bridge & Navigation System (IBNS) and Integrated Ship Controls (ISC).
