LCE Celebrates 50 Years of Reliability, Innovation and Employee Ownership
Founded in 1976 by U.S. Navy engineers, the global reliability and asset management firm completes a 40-year transition to full employee ownership while expanding across 7 locations
Charleston, S.C. — [October 21, 2026] — Marking five decades of operational consulting and asset management, Life Cycle Engineering (LCE), a national and international provider of engineering, information technology, asset management, consulting and professional education, today announced its milestone 50th anniversary, capped by its final transition to a 100% employee-owned organization.
From Submarines to Global Fortune 500 Manufacturing

Founded in Charleston in 1976 by U.S. Navy civilian engineers George Thornley and Jim Fei, LCE began by applying their experience supporting the Navy’s nuclear powered submarine fleet to help organizations improve the reliability and performance of their operations.
Over the past five decades, LCE has expanded both its geographic reach and the services it provides as its clients’ needs have evolved. What began with an engineering focus has grown to include engineering asset management, digital solutions, workforce development, and professional education, while maintaining the practical, results-focused approach that has defined the company since its founding.
What Is Life Cycle Engineering’s 50-Year Market Impact?
Life Cycle Engineering evolved from a small Charleston engineering firm into an organization serving clients across the country and around the world, with seven offices across the US with additional remote global work centers. LCE has supported thousands of Government projects, more than 2,000 companies and trained more than 15,000 professionals across key industries such as manufacturing, life sciences, power generation, mining, and food and beverage. Across its portfolio, LCE’s team has supported clients ranging from the U.S. Navy, Space Force and other Department of War entities to organizations such as Pfizer, Coca-Cola, Toyota, and others.
LCE established its Employee Stock Ownership Plan in 1986 and became 100% employee-owned in 2024, completing a transition four decades in the making. The company’s commitment to its employees has earned national recognition, including VETS Indexes 3 Star Employer and Best Place to Work in Engineering by Best Companies Group, as well as Best Places to Work recognition in five states. Employee ownership gives its people a direct stake in the company’s long-term success.
For LCE President and CEO Bob Fei, the anniversary is personal. Fei is the son of co-founder Jim Fei and has had a front-row view of the company’s evolution from a Charleston engineering firm into a national and international organization.
“My father and George started LCE 50 years ago with a belief that good engineering and good people could make a meaningful difference. I’ve had the privilege of watching that idea grow based on the hard work of our team and the trust our customers have in us.. Today, LCE is 100% employee-owned, making this anniversary as much about the people carrying that legacy forward as it is about what we’re building together. We all have an opportunity to shape what comes next.”
Evolving Over the Next 50 Years
As Life Cycle Engineering enters its sixth decade, the company is focused on continuing to grow alongside its customers while building on the foundation that has guided it since its founding. As a 100% employee-owned company, LCE’s growth is driven by the people who know its clients, understand their challenges, and help shape the solutions LCE provides. That combination of customer focus and employee ownership gives LCE a strong foundation for where it goes next.
“From the beginning, we’ve always tried to understand what our clients need and find the best way to help them. That hasn’t changed. What has changed is the range of ways we can support them. As our clients have evolved, we’ve evolved with them, and I think that has been a big part of our success,” Fei said.
