What We Do

LCE partners with educational institutions, non-profits and employers to offer apprenticeship programs for a skilled workforce

These ongoing partnerships create opportunities for youth, workers transitioning into second careers, and entry-level employees to gain the skills they need to build successful, satisfying careers.

Marine Welding Apprenticeship

The Ship Repair Association of Hawaii (SRAH), an association of civilian private ship repair companies, relies on mainland personnel to supplement local labor for U.S. Navy surface ship maintenance. Welders are in especially short supply on Oahu, so SRAH teamed up with LCE to develop a training program for entry level marine welders.

LCE built the curriculum and welcomed its first class of students in 2020. The students, some of whom were displaced from hospitality and tourism jobs by COVID-19, studied industrial safety and ship familiarity, as well as basic trade information and welding. Students received 160 hours of instruction, attending virtual classes in the evenings, and meeting in-person on Saturdays to spend time in the Hawaii Community College welding booth. After completing the course, the students secured jobs as entry level welders for local operations. We continue to provide additional cohorts as needed and in partnership with SRAH.

Marine Worker Apprenticeship

In partnership with Cabras Marine Corporation, LCE developed a three session, 450-hour program that can be tailored to train welders, shipfitters, marine machinists, pipefitters, painters, and combined wood craftsmen/stagers. The apprenticeship program is conducted at Guam Community College.

IT Apprenticeship

We developed our IT apprenticeship program in 2014 with the goal of equipping and training a new workforce to help satisfy Government and industry increasing demands for cybersecurity and IT skills. LCE’s IT Apprenticeship program is approved by the S.C. Department of Labor, and enables participants to follow a written curriculum for up to three years with guidance from skilled mentors currently in the field. Apprentices work on real-world projects and graduate from the program with industry certifications such as Security+, Network+, and CCNA.

LCE employs an active learning methodology that utilizes activities such as short-range problem solving to long-term case studies and team-based projects to teach IT problem solving skills. We customize the curriculum according to the participants’ incoming abilities and include a foundation in topics including cloud/virtualization, operating systems, networking, databases, and cybersecurity (Identification, Implementation, Assess/Audit, Monitor).
